Coalition Sign-on Statement
Schools and Communities United is a coalition to defend and improve our public schools in Wisconsin, particularly Milwaukee. It is comprised of community, educator, civic, student, labor and religious organizations.
Our core principles:
- Education is a civil right and a public responsibility. A strong public education system is the foundation of our democracy, of equal opportunity, and of an economy that works for all.
- All schools receiving public tax dollars should be constituted democratically, operated transparently, respectful of anti-discrimination/free speech/due process rights, and be fully accountable to the public that pays for them.
- The state government of Wisconsin has the legal obligation, and is the primary agent, to provide equal access to regardless of race, class, gender, primary language, ability, special education needs, sexual orientation, immigration status or geography.
- We oppose school privatization, whether through private voucher schools or privately run charters.
- We respect democracy. The parents and families, students and educators in our public schools, in collaboration with their communities, play an essential role in developing the solutions to our educational challenges.
- All children deserve quality classrooms, from early childhood education, to a culturally relevant curriculum, to fully certified educators, to the right to learn two languages.
- All children deserve a safe school environment; career, college and civic readiness; after school programs, and wrap-around social services,
